OTTAWA—Oceans North is celebrating the appointment of a new leader.
Effective today, Sheena Kennedy will take on the role of Executive Director. Kennedy previously served Oceans North as the Vice-President of Communications and Operations, where she worked to advance key priorities and initiatives across the organization.
“We’re very pleased that Dr. Kennedy has accepted this position,” says Chris Mills, the Chair of Oceans North’s Board of Directors. “We wish to congratulate her and express our sincere gratitude to all members of the executive team for their leadership over the previous transition period.”
In addition to her previous role with Oceans North, Kennedy has extensive experience working on public policy in collaboration with Northern communities. She holds a PhD from Carleton University, where she completed the collaborative program in Public Policy and Political Economy, focused on Arctic policy and governance. She has worked as a Research Associate with the Carleton Centre for Community Innovation and as an independent researcher on projects related to education, community development, and resource governance in Inuit Nunangat.
“I look forward to helping build a future where oceans thrive for the benefit of communities, Canadians, and the planet as a whole. ”
– Sheena Kennedy, Executive Director
Beyond her research and leadership experience, Kennedy co-founded Northern Public Affairs in 2011, the first public policy magazine dedicated to Northern Canada.
“Oceans North is built on the belief that partnership and collaboration are essential for realizing our shared goals of a healthy ocean and healthy communities, in the Arctic and beyond,” Kennedy says. “That mission is what first drew me to this organization, and it continues to drive my commitment to this work. I look forward to helping build a future where oceans thrive for the benefit of communities, Canadians, and the planet as a whole.”
