To advance Oceans North’s work to support marine conservation efforts in partnership with Indigenous and coastal communities, Oceans North will collect personal information that our supporters shares with us and from our web traffic. This privacy policy explains our commitment to protecting personal information belonging to our donors, supporters and collaborators. Additionally, this policy explains how personal information is used and how privacy concerns can be raised.

How we define personal information

Oceans North defines personal information as any information about a person which does not include their business information. Oceans North does not collect any health or medical information and information such as a person’s religion, criminal record or personal views and opinions. However, if a person or organization provides business information which Oceans North receives as personal information, it will be treated as personal information.

What is Oceans North’s View on Consent?

When collecting personal information, Oceans North obtains consent from the person whose data is collected either explicitly or implicitly. Oceans North recognizes that individuals may withdraw their consent at any time. Withdrawals can happen by contacting us using the information provided under “How can I raise a privacy concern?”

Explicit consent means that a person has explicitly mentions they wish to provide their personal information. This can be done orally, electronically or in writing. For instance, a person or organization may opt-in to receive our newsletters or sign a petition.

Implied consent is consent where it can be reasonably inferred that a person is consenting to provide personal information. For instance, a person or organization is giving their implied consent when they contact us about an advocacy concern and when we receive donations.

What information does Oceans North collect?

Oceans North collects personal information and our third-parties collect information as well.

With your consent, Oceans North collects demographic information such as gender and age. We also collect contact information to stay in touch with you so that we can provide donation receipts, newsletters on our activism and more. We also track your digital information, such as your IP address, email address and social media information, to communicate our results.

Oceans North collects four different cookies: strictly necessary cookies, Performance Cookies, Targeting Cookies and Functionality Cookies. Oceans North will use necessary cookies without our visitors’ permission and ask for permission for the other cookies.

What our third parties collect

Oceans North uses Google Analytics to improve our website’s offerings. To this end, Oceans North is compliant with Google’s policies. Google Analytics collects web traffic statistics, such as the times visitors view our website and the visitor’s movement within our website. 

Google stores its analytical data on US soil and visitors using any web browser can opt-out of Google Analytics by downloading the official Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

Oceans North also uses targeted advertising from Facebook and Google. Oceans North does not provide your personal information in its usage of these services as these two organizations collect the data themselves. How is my personal information used?

The information we gather enables us to maintain and optimize our website and outreach. Oceans North can evaluate the popularity of its work to build on its advocacy. We aggregate your data with other peoples’ data to evaluate our impact, but we do not list your personal information after the data aggregates are produced.

Oceans North may disclose your personal information if it has reasonable grounds to believe that doing so is necessary to fulfill its legal obligations, abide by the law, prevent or investigate wrongdoing relating to our work, protect the personal safety of our partners and collaborators, or protect Oceans North against legal liability.

We may also disclose and send analytical data to third parties performing services for Oceans North. However, these third parties are not permitted to use your information for any purpose beyond the services they provide to Oceans North. These services include but are not limited to mailing brochures, processing donations, providing technical services for our website and online outreach.

Compliance with this standard ensures that network vulnerabilities are found and addressed to improve how your payment data is protected continually. All storage and transferal of your financial details by Oceans North and our Approved Scanning Vendor is PCI compliant as well.

Oceans reviews and approves our policy every three years and updates it as needed.
