Organization Overview: Oceans North is an environmental charity that supports marine conservation and ocean-climate action in partnership with Indigenous and coastal communities across Canada, Western Greenland, and the High Seas. We are dedicated to preserving the health of the Arctic and northern oceans and promoting sustainable, community-led stewardship.
Position Summary
We are currently seeking an Engagement Specialist to join our team. The ideal candidate has a wide suite of skills, experience in marketing or communications, and works well as part of a team while producing high-quality work under deadline. They care about the marine environment and will bring passion, creativity, and insight to the problems facing it, motivating others to do the same. And they are up to date on the latest trends in social media and digital marketing, while not being afraid to swim against the current.
Responsibilities
- Lead the management and monitoring of Oceans North’s social media channels, helping to develop and execute strategies tailored to each
- Help create and edit compelling content for digital marketing campaigns
- Work with staff and consultants to grow and engage Oceans North’s audience (both email list and social)
- Track media, events and significant campaign milestones
- Produce content for the Oceans North website and update existing web pages
- Collaborate with other team members/contractors to develop visual assets, including photos, videos, infographics and other materials
- Format documents, reports and presentations
- Utilize digital tools and social media platforms to assist in organizing and executing community events
- Other duties as required to support organizational development.
Knowledge & Skills
- A postsecondary degree in journalism, public relations, or communications, with a minimum of four years of journalism or communications experience is preferred
- Excellent copywriting and digital storytelling skills
- Familiarity with digital marketing tools, including email newsletters, Meta Business Suite, and CRM systems (knowledge of Engaging Networks specifically a plus)
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
- Familiarity with WordPress and basic HTML (additional web development knowledge a plus)
- Project management skills and attention to detail
- Facility with Canva and Adobe Creative Cloud products
- Familiarity with issues facing the environment and ocean
- Experience collaborating with Indigenous people and/or small coastal communities
- Indigenous language skills or bilingualism is highly preferred.
Working Conditions
- A combination of office work and field time is a mandatory expectation of the position.
- Regular travel is a requirement, with frequency dependent on project or campaign demands and the needs of our partners.
- An ability to focus on detailed tasks for extended periods is required.
- The position requires the ability to meet deadlines and manage stress effectively.
