Where We Work

Oceans North’s work takes us to the Arctic, the North Atlantic, and across international borders.

See Where The Work Reaches

Our work spans diverse regions across Canada and around the world. Whether challenges seem local or global, the ocean connects everything.

Explore the wide-ranging geography of our initiatives using our interactive map. Oceans North is committed to Indigenous-led partnerships and evidence-based solutions, and many of these projects work with local communities to safeguard the places that matter most to people and the planet.

Oceans North works in deep partnership with Indigenous and coastal communities throughout Inuit Nunangat and Atlantic Canada to address the unprecedented environmental changes impacting these regions. From Tallurutiup Imanga, an Arctic oasis home to the world’s largest summering population of narwhal, to the Gully, the North Atlantic’s largest undersea canyon, we’ve always taken the time to establish local partnerships and recognize the ways conservation is connected to cultural, social, and economic well-being.

Oceans North is also active throughout northern Manitoba and Ontario. Our work takes us from James Bay, home to the Omushkego and Eeyou Istchee Cree, to the connected waters of Hudson Bay, where 41 Inuit and First Nation communities rely on its waters for food, economic sustenance, and travel.

Recognizing that threats to the ocean do not stop at the borders of any one country, neither does our work. Oceans North is engaged on many cross-cutting policy issues, including deep-sea mining; protecting life in the high seas; sustainably managing international fisheries; reducing emissions from maritime industries; and mitigating threats to the Central Arctic Ocean.

In Greenland, we are collaborating with our partners at Oceans North Kalaallit Nunaat to establish the world’s first bilateral marine protected area, covering a vast and unique Arctic microclimate, and to ensure prosperous, sustainable fisheries.

Together, we strive to protect and preserve our oceans for future generations.
