OTTAWA—Yesterday, the federal government announced new climate legislation, entitled An Act respecting transparency and accountability in Canada’s efforts to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2050.

Here is Oceans North’s statement in response by Brent Dancey, Director of Marine Climate Action:

“We are encouraged by the government’s climate accountability legislation and what it could mean for Canada’s shipping sector. Moving beyond the International Maritime Organization’s less ambitious agenda and towards science-based targets for reducing shipping emissions is good for the environment and the economy. We are looking forward to seeing detailed plans for attaining net-zero emissions by 2050 and expect the shipping industry and port authorities to be well represented on the new Advisory Body. We will work with government and other parties to advocate for the inclusion of a 2025 target and an independent advisory committee to oversee progress in the legislation.

Canadians cannot afford to wait until 2030 to know if our government is on the right track to address this climate crisis. Oceans North urges the Government of Canada to develop a 2025 emissions target and action plan that includes ambitious measures for the Canadian shipping industry, thereby harnessing the potential in this sector to bring about new jobs and innovation, which will be critical to Canada’s economic recovery and to meeting our overall targets.”
